DWYCK: DIY Baby Powder

By now, you have probably been tagged, forwarded, or even shared with friends and family the news that Johnson & Johnson, one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, was ordered to pay out $72 million dollars to the family of an Alabama woman who died from ovarian cancer in 2013, which the family argued was caused by the pharma company’s baby powder. The news that J&J’s baby powder, whose ingredients contain talc, has prompted moms everywhere to start dumping their beloved bum barrier in the trash and search for more natural solutions for everything from mild diaper irritation to heat rash.


To be honest, I haven’t used store bought baby powder in a very long time on my LO; the plume of powder can get into their nasal passages and irritate and even damage their little lungs and it’s really easy and inexpensive to make at home. Here’s a quick recipe for the baby powder I use; however, take it, tweak it, and make it your own!

I used a blend of organic cornstarch and arrowroot powder and added a few drops of lavender essential oil…so let’s call mines Electric Relaxation Baby Powder. I found some cute sifter jars (5 per pack) from Target in the $3.00 bins; however, any container that can be fitted with a sifter top will do.



  1. Mix the arrowroot powder and cornstarch in bowl. Add a few drops of the essential oil of your choice and blend with a fork or whisk.
  2. Using a funnel, transfer the mixture to a jar and store. Use as you would regular baby powder.


Options: you can add white kaolin clay to the mixture (about 1-2 tablespoons); however, I don’t like the grittiness the clay adds
